Our History

When I was fifteen I felt the Lord calling me to full time ministry.  Full time ministry, what did that even mean?  I did not feel called to be a pastor or even a youth pastor.  I definitely did not feel Called to live in a hut in Africa, as a missionary!  So what should I do, what direction do I go?  I did like everyone else usually does.  I ignored the Call since I did not know what to do about it and went on with my life. When I got to college, I still did not have a clear direction, but still felt the call.  I again did what everyone else usually does, I decided to try and get an education that would lead to a very comfortable life. So now I am finished with college, still the Call, still no clear direction.  After many jobs that I thought would be great, including dream jobs like being a park ranger, I decided to start my own business.  Although, I loved working for myself and was finding success in it, like the many other jobs, I was feeling very unfulfilled.  I knew there was something else I was called to do.  So I finally decided to give in and follow Him no matter where He was leading.  Well…not really!  I thought that was what I was doing or at least that was what I was telling myself!  In reality I was ready to follow Him, after selling my business and making lots of money.  Surely He wanted me to step out on Faith with a lot of money as a back up, just in case this following Him stuff did not pan out.

Not truly understanding how God works, I had to go through a tough “correction period”.  He had to get my complete and undivided attention.  He got it!  I learned the hard way, because I am hard headed.  After reading how He called the disciples, I realized He was calling me right then.  He was not calling me when I thought I was ready, but right then when He was ready. (Matthew 4:18-22)  So I just gave in, completely.  My wife and I both decided to lay down our life and pick up our crosses.  We were “sold out” and for once I understood what that meant.  We took some time to be still and let Him speak to us.  Finally I got the clear vision that He had been trying to show me for over fifteen years.  Sometimes I feel like I wasted all those years.  In reality, He was preparing me to serve Him the whole time.  Many folks run from their Calling.  Then there are folks like me, who truly want to follow, they just do not how or what path to take.

Now that we had the vision and we had surrendered, it was time for action.  I had just left the business world and had no clue how to start a ministry or even more importantly, what to do once we got it started.  I did however have great confidence in the One that was guiding us.  So on an April night in 2005, four guys came together in Young Harris, GA and started Mtn2Sea Outfitters. Right from the start, we found out that if we truly wanted to follow Him and place our complete faith in Him, things were certainly going to be different than we had planned.  We had planned on starting a ministry and instantly having success. We were successful, just not in the way we had planned.  I had thought that success meant that my wife and I would both be serving the Lord while at the same time living a comfortable, all be it slightly meager, life.  The ministry would grow quickly and we would be reaching and serving 1000’s.  Well realty quickly set in and we discovered that when you give it all up and over to Him, it matters very little what you want or expect.  During the first four years of the ministry, we found ourselves living in free basements or houses folks were selling. We ate chicken that came from the quality control inspector at a chicken plant.  We basically did what ever we had to do to keep the ministry going including cashing in our retirement and truly leaving behind the lifestyle we had known before.  We also were greatly surprised with the hard time we had even trying to do ministry.  We struggled in the area we started at, to just come up with opportunities to serve.  Although we knew tons of folks and many, many Christians in the area, we were never truly accepted as a ministry.  We were never considered legitimate because we were not part of a church or denomination.  These were very tough times.  We often asked God if we were truly on the right path.  After daily prayers for Him to put us where He wanted us, even if it was not in this ministry, He did indeed do so.

We had felt called to come to Glynn County from the beginning, but choose to start the ministry in the mountains where we felt safe and thought it would be much easier.  Finally we woke up and decided to obey.  So in 2008, we packed up what little we had and moved south.  We had no money, no connections and knew absolutely no one, but we were coming anyway.  I told my wife that we were coming in September, no matter what.  I had already made plans for us to live in a tent at the local campground.  Even though we had no concrete plans, we had learned that the only plan we needed was to trust and obey.  If He says, “move here”, then that was what we were going to do.  Right before we were going to move down, Christie gets a call out of the blue, in September, to come interview in Glynn County for a teaching position.  We went down for the interview and they hired her that day.  So not only were we on our way to moving the ministry where He was leading, He was providing much more than we ever dreamed of.  For the first time in four years, we would have insurance and money for food and even an occasional movie.  We still don’t have any money or possessions personally. However, He has given us enough to meet our personal bills and even have some left over to help support the ministry.

As far as the ministry is going, He is truly blessing it.  We have found the folks here very interested in working with us and allowing us to serve along side of them.  The ministry continues to grow at a rapid pace.  The difference between the ministries struggles there and its success here is simple, we were where we thought we should be and not where He wanted us to be.  The way we started was different from most ministries.  The way we do things are also different from most ministries.  Even our name is crazy to many!  However, this ministry continues to press on over five years later, letting the Bible guide us, not “man” or some guide to running ministries.  Even though we do things a little different, we are striving to do them His way and His way only.  This way of thinking is what has and will guide us prayerfully far into the future.
